On this Day: In 1834 Commandant Booth was alerted to deficiencies in the guard – they were asleep! Booth wrote in his journal that he as woken early, only to be told by one of his soldiers, that he stopped in at a constable station on the way to Port Arthur and “found all the hands fast asleep; he took two of their firelocks as a trophy of their vigilance and walked off”.
Booth recommended that 2 constables be dismissed to make an example of them.
