The 28th of April 2026 will mark 30 years since the 1996 tragedy at Port Arthur.

Decisions on how to respectfully observe the anniversary have been made by a specially appointed Planning Committee and informed by extensive consultation with survivors, families of those who died, first responders, the local community, staff, local government representatives, and State and Federal Parliamentarians.

Following many months of planning, the committee would like to confirm details of Words of Love, a day of quiet reflection to be held on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

The service will begin at 1pm in the memorial garden and will include words of love shared by a survivor and a member of the Tasman Peninsula community. There will also be a performance of Always Remember, the song written for the 20th anniversary, performed by the Peninsula Singers. At 1.30pm, a minute’s silence will be observed to remember those who died and the enduring impact of that day. During the event, guests will have the opportunity to lay a wreath or flowers at the foot of the memorial cross. Attendance at the memorial garden is free.

We ask those wishing to attend the ceremony to register by contacting consultation@portarthur.org.au.

Out of respect for the people attending, combined with the restricted space of the Memorial Garden the Australian Broadcasting Corporation will be the only media organisation permitted to film the ceremony for distribution to other outlets. Designated seating will be provided for those who prefer not to appear in footage or photographs. The site is fully accessible for wheelchairs and mobility aids.

The Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority and Planning Committee recognises that people will come to this day carrying different memories, different grief, and different needs.

We ask all who attend to be guided by respect, empathy and sensitivity, so that every person can grieve, reflect and remember in a safe and supportive environment.

Media outlets wishing to receive pool footage and photographs are asked to register their interest.
