About the Port Arthur Historic Site
The Port Arthur Historic Site is a must-see for any visitor to Tasmania.
It is located in the south-east of the island state, approximately 96 kilometres or a 90 minute drive from the capital city, Hobart.
For those with limited time, it is possible to see the Site in a day tour from Hobart. Various companies offer coach and cruising tour options (see below). However, to fully experience Port Arthur, the nearby Coal Mines Historic Site and the spectacular scenery and fascinating cultural heritage of the surrounding region, spending a few days in the area is recommended.
For full details on the Port Arthur Experience, please see our Plan Your Visit section
About the Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
The Cascades Female Factory is Australia’s most significant site associated with female convicts. It is located in the shadow of Mount Wellington, a short distance from the centre of Hobart.
The Cascades Female Factory was a self-contained, purpose-built institution intended to reform female convicts, where the inmates did laundry and needlework services, offsetting some of the Colony’s penal costs. It is perhaps best known as the setting for Bryce Courtenay’s novel The Potato Factory.
The Cascade Female Factory is now on the World Heritage list as one of 11 historic places that form The Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property. Thousands of women and children were imprisoned here, and many never left.
Daily tours are available to bring the stories of the women and children who were incarcerated here to life.
See www.femalefactory.org.au for more information.
