Tucked away in a corner of the Tasman Peninsula is the little known settlement known as the Coal Mines. This place of industry played a significant part in the history of crime and punishment during the convict era. Explore the site where the ‘worst of the worst’ toiled away in unstable and suffocating mine shafts and did time in unique and cruel solitary confinement.
Hear the stories behind the ruins, the people and the infamous underground cells that you may otherwise miss as you are guided through this World Heritage Site.
Tours depart at 12:00pm every Sunday until 1 December 2020 from the Coal Mines Historic Site.
Tours will run for approximately 2 hours and will operate for a minimum 2 people and a maximum of 10 people.
The tour is conducted outdoors, so best to be prepared for all kinds of Tasmanian weather. A reasonable level of fitness is required.
The Coal Mines Historic Site is a remote location, approximately 25 minutes’ drive from Port Arthur. This World Heritage Site has limited services with no food or retail outlets.
