The Port Arthur Historic Site has won Tasmania’s top tourism award for the fifth consecutive year.
Port Arthur was named as the state’s major tourist attraction at the Tourism Council’s annual awards in Hobart last week.
The win follows a bumper year for the site. It recorded its highest-ever visitor numbers in 2003-04 (253,122 day visitors), building on the record highs achieved the previous year.
During the year Port Arthur continued its extensive conservation work program for buildings and infrastructure as well as the reconstruction of historic gardens.
The site was also nominated for the National Heritage List.
