Port Arthur Historic Site named in Gourmet Traveller Awards

May 28, 2009

For the second successive year, the Port Arthur Historic Site has been named Australia’s Best Heritage Tourism experience in the prestigious Gourmet Traveller magazine travel awards, which were announced in Sydney last night.

The publication points out that while Australia inspires the world with its sunny lifestyle, people and natural riches, Port Arthur remembers the darker episodes in our nation’s past.

In its citation, the magazine says the Site deserves recognition ‘for dealing with such confronting stories so sensitively” and its staff “deserve our praise for their committment to one of our most moving pilgrimage sites.”

Other Tasmanian tourism operators were also named in the awards – Cradle Mountain Lodge was named Best Lodge, while Maria Island Walk, Cradle Mountain Walk, the Freycinet Experience Walk and Islington Hotel were named runners up in their categories.
