Many reasons to visit Port Arthur this September

23/08/2010

Whether you are a regular visitor or someone who hasn’t been here in years, visiting the Port Arthur Historic Site this September is a great idea, for many reasons.

World Heritage

Celebrate the recent inscription of the Australian Convict Sites as a World Heritage Site by getting out and about with the family to explore Australia’s convict origins. The eleven sites included on the listing include sites in Western Australia, Norfolk Island, New South Wales as well as Tasmania, making it one of the most widely-spread World Heritage sites ever.

Five of the eleven sites are in Tasmania, including the Coal Mines and Port Arthur Historic Sites, as well as the Cascade Female Factory in South Hobart, Darlington Probation Station on Maria Island and Woolmers and Brickendon Estates near Longford in Northern Tasmania – plenty of reasons and places to visit this Spring.

Special Offer

All visitors who purchase a daytime entry pass to the Port Arthur Historic Site this September will be offered an upgrade to a Ticket of Leave pass. The Ticket of Leave pass provides the holder with free return entry to the Port Arthur site for two whole years, making it easy to visit and really explore this amazing place. It’s a great option for families, making visiting Port Arthur affordable, as well as for those who love to bring visiting family and friends when they come to stay.

School Holiday Fun

The on-site Port Arthur Education Centre will be buzzing throughout the school holidays with activities and fun for the family. Find out about fantascopes (a very early form of animation) or make your own convict brick or clothes peg doll. There will be two 1-hour sessions daily, at 10:30am and 12:30pm.  No bookings are required and there is no cost involved as the activities are included in the price of site entry. The activities will be available from Saturday 4 September until Sunday 19 September.
