About Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
The Cascades Female Factory is Australia’s most significant site associated with female convicts. It is located in the shadow of Mount Wellington, a short distance from the centre of Hobart.
The Cascades Female Factory was a self-contained, purpose-built institution intended to reform female convicts, where the inmates did laundry and needlework services, offsetting some of the Colony's penal costs. It is perhaps best known as the setting for Bryce Courtenay’s novel The Potato Factory.
The Cascade Female Factory is now on the World Heritage list as one of 11 historic places that form The Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property. Thousands of women and children were imprisoned here, and many never left.
Daily tours are available to bring the stories of the women and children who were incarcertated her to life.

Information for Cruise Ships
Situated on one of the most scenic harbours in Australia, Port Arthur Historic Site is becoming a popular destination for cruise ships in its own right. In recent years the Historic Site has welcomed many of the largest vessels cruising in Australian waters.
The sheltered deep-water harbour is more than sufficient to provide the largest cruise ships with a safe anchorage close to the Site. Access to the site is via ships’ tenders to our private, all-weather jetty.
