The Port Arthur Historic Site will become an outdoor music venue for the day on Sunday 29 March, when Manhattan-based string quartet ETHEL perform with the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra as part of Ten Days on the Island.
“America’s favourite string band” ETHEL performs in a very special collaborative event at Port Arthur. ETHEL’s four world-class, Juilliard-trained composer/musicians join forces with local talent from the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra (TYO) for a series of workshops culminating in a one-off concert event at Port Arthur.
ETHEL’s musically omnivorous, prolific and passionate musicians regularly provide lectures, workshops, performances and master classes at colleges, music schools and universities throughout the United States. Now they have been invited by Ten Days on the Island to shine a spotlight on young Tasmanian musicians.
During a week-long series of workshops celebrating the power of music as a common language, ETHEL and the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra will together explore cultural perspectives on music and improvisation, while developing new compositions to feature in their combined concert.
Pack a picnic – or purchase a delicious snack and a bottle of wine from our gourmet barbecue stall – and bring your family of music lovers to Port Arthur for a day of music to remember.
Experience the sounds of ETHEL performing a moving acoustic Sonic Morning Meditation before leading the 70-strong Tasmanian Youth Orchestra in a concert performance featuring Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and new works by Australian and Native American composers, including compositions created especially for this event during the week-long workshop process.
