Emancipated convicts in colonial Tasmania topic of next Port Arthur Talk

July 14, 2004

Emancipated convicts in colonial Tasmania from the 1850s will be discussed at the next Port Arthur Talk.

Dr Shayne Breen, who has a PhD in History from the University of Tasmania and has been a lecturer in Aboriginal Studies at the University of Tasmania since 1990, will present a talk on the emancipated convicts in colonial Tasmania.

The story of emancipated convicts in colonial Tasmania remains largely untold. The same could be said for the general working class at the time.

Most scholarly attention has been reserved for convicts and the system they endured. But after they were ‘freed’, emancipists also endured a system of control too.

This talk will discuss strategies used to manage emancipists and the responses of emancipists to those strategies.

Everyone is welcome to attend the event on Wednesday July 28, 2004 at the Asylum, Port Arthur Historic Site at 5.30 p.m.
